How to Spray Your Tail Lights Black
- 1). Remove the tail light cover from your vehicle. Tail lights are attached differently to different vehicles. Most of them will have some screws holding them in place though. Unscrew any screws you see and pull back on the tail light. It will likely have some tabs holding it firmly in place.
- 2). Clean the inside of the tail light with soap and water. Rinse and let it dry completely. You will do the spraying of the tail light on the inside of the cover.
- 3). Cover the outside of the tail light cover with masking tape. Make sure that it is completely covered. You don't want any paint on the outside of the tail light cover.
- 4). Lean the tail light cover against a vertical surface, such as a wall, so that it is standing upright. Cover the surface behind the tail light cover with plenty of newspaper.
- 5). Spray a light coating of transparent black paint. Transparent black spray paint, such as Model Master or Testors, can be found at hobby shops and some auto stores. Make slow even sprays until the entire inner surface is covered.
- 6). Let the tail light dry and test it out. It could take as much as 24 hours for the tail light to completely dry out. Once dry, put it back on your vehicle and see if it is dark enough for you. Get a friend to hit the brakes for you to check out the level of visibility.
- 7). Add another coat. If the tail light was lighter than you wanted it to be, you can always add more paint. Just test between each layer of paint to make sure you are not getting the tail light cover too dark to see your tail lights through.
