How to Fix Rust on the Front Windshield of a 1970 Chevelle
- 1). Remove the windshield wipers. The 1970 Chevelle has molding clips that hold the molding in place. Remove the clips with a Phillips head screwdriver. Pry the molding loose with a putty knife. Remove the molding from the windshield.
- 2). Wash the windshield frame with a mild detergent and water. Scrub the frame to remove surface dirt, grease and other contaminants. Dry the frame with a towel.
- 3). Protect the windshield and the hood of the car with tape, newspapers and plastic tarps. Apply masking tape around the perimeter of the window frame. Cover the windshield with plastic. Cover the hood with newspapers or a plastic tarp.
- 4). Scrub the windshield frame with a wire brush to knock off the larger pieces of rust. Sand the rusted areas with sandpaper. Sand heavily rusted spots with 60 to 80 grit sandpaper. Sand less concentrated rust spots with 120 grit sandpaper.
- 5). Wipe the frame with denatured alcohol and a soft cloth.
- 6). Repair holes and nicks with an auto body filler such as Bondo. Apply the filler with a putty knife. Fill in holes and cracks smoothly and evenly. Allow the filler to dry and harden. Sand the repaired areas with 45 to 120 grit sandpaper.
- 7). Apply two light coats of self-etching auto primer to the frame. Hold the nozzle six to eight inches above the frame and apply smooth and even coats. Allow the primer to dry between applications.
- 8). Paint the windshield with a rust-inhibiting auto paint. Apply several light coats of paint. Allow the paint to completely dry.
