How to Mix Bias & Radial Tires on a Trailer
- 1). Count the number of axles on the trailer. Trailers with more than one axle can have mixed tire construction. Each axle, however, must have the same type of tire construction to avoid damage. Trailers with a single axle are recommended to have the same type of tire, radial-ply or bias-ply, on all wheels.
- 2). Identify the ply to be used on each axle. Each axle must have the same tire-ply construction type on all wheels. Identify which tires will be replaced. Brace the trailer with wheel chocks on one side of the trailer. Jack the trailer on the opposite side. On the jacked side of the trailer, use the lug wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts and wheel.
- 3). Empty the tire of air. Use the tire removal tool to remove the tire bead from the rim. Remove the tire from the wheel.
- 4). Install the new tire on the wheel. Reinstall the tire bead on the wheel rim. Use the air compressor to inflate the tire to maximum cold air pressure.
- 5). Install the new tire and wheel assembly on the axle. Install and tighten the lug nuts. Lower the jack. Remove the wheel chocks.
