How to Remove a Chevy Transmission

    • 1). Raise up the front end of the Chevy vehicle with a jack. Place the stands at the support joints on both sides of the vehicle. Remove the jack.

    • 2). Raise the back end of the Chevy with a jack. Place two additional jack stands at the rear support joints. Remove the jack.

    • 3). Slide underneath the front end of the Chevy. Use a wrench to remove the U bolts connecting the differential to the drive shaft. Pull the drive shaft apart from the differential, and pull it out of the Chevy's transmission.

    • 4). Lift up the vehicle's hood. Loosen the bolt holding the transmission dipstick tube in place using the wrench. Pull out the dipstick tube. Make sure to leave the dipstick in the tube.

    • 5). Get beneath the vehicle again. Use the wrench to remove the shift linkage and speedometer cable from the transmission.

    • 6). Pull the vacuum line off the diaphragm. Put the jack under the transmission and carefully raise it up slightly.

    • 7). Remove the bolts connecting the engine and the transmission with a wrench. Remove the bolts that connect the flywheel to the torque converter.

    • 8). Pull the transmission apart from the engine. Pull the transmission out from underneath the Chevy.
