  Some people want to remove the window tint on their car windows because it has deteriorated with age, becoming discolored or filled with bubbles, while others find that window tint is impractical for them because they do most of their driving at night. Whatever the reason, those who don't wish to take the car to a tint shop to have the tint removed can remove it themselves in their driveway with a few household products, a sunny day and a few hours of their time.
  
  

Preparing

• To easily remove the window tint on your car, you'll first need to make sure you have a few products on hand. You will need a black trash bag, soapy water, undiluted ammonia, super-fine steel wool, a razorblade or sharp knife, paper towels and glass cleaner.
  
  

Getting Started

• First cut the black trash bag to fit the shape of your window. Spray soapy water on the outside of the window and smooth the garbage bag flat against it. The garbage bag will absorb heat from the sun, helping to easily pull the tint off the window.
  
  

Spray with Ammonia

• Protect the surfaces inside your car with a tarp, and spray the undiluted ammonia directly on to the window tint. Since ammonia has a very strong smell and you will be inside the car, you should either hold your breath or wear a mask while completing this step. Trap the ammonia against the window with another trash bag or plastic wrap so that it does not evaporate. Park your car with the window directly in the sunlight for about an hour, allowing the heat to soften the tint's adhesive.
  
  

Peeling the Film

• Removing tint can be difficult because it is usually put on in several layers. If only the top layer comes off when you peel, it's going to be difficult to remove the remaining layers. You must try to remove all the layers at once. Leave the trash bag or plastic wrap in place inside the window and use your fingernail or a razor and start peeling the window tint from the corner of the window. Try to peel it off in one piece. As you strip the film, keep it moist with ammonia. Being careful to not cut the defroster lines, you can use a razor to peel off any tint that did not peel off. Any residual adhesive can be removed with ammonia and steel wool. Make sure to wipe it off with a paper towel before it dries. Remove the trash bag from the outside of the window and clean well with glass window cleaner.
  
  

Removing tint from side windows

• With side windows, soaking is usually not necessary. Cut a notch in the tint and attempt to peel it off. It will usually come off in several pieces. Spray any remaining adhesive with soapy water and scrape it off with a razor blade. The glue is clear and can be difficult to see, so inspect the window for any adhesive you may have missed and finish up with glass window cleaner and paper towels.
