1979 Harley Davidson Crankcase Oil Specifications
- Harley-Davidson's 1979 models were the Electra Glide, Super Glide, Low Rider, Sportster, Shovelhead and Fat Boy. Theses six models were available with three engine sizes: 1000cc, 1200cc, and 1340cc. All three power plants were two-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled engines with five-speed transmissions. With the exception of the XLH 1000 Sportster, all of the 1979 crankcases were similar.
- Harley-Davidson service representatives in Sanford, Florida, strongly recommend using 60-weight crankcase oil in the summer and 50-weight crankcase oil in the winter to prevent damage to your Harley.
- Crankcase oil should be changed every other oil change, that is, is every 5,000 miles.
- The 1979 XLH 1000 Sportster requires one quart of oil. All other models require 29 to 30 ounces, depending on the amount of oil that drains when servicing.
