How to Grow a Loquat Plum Tree
- 1). Choose a sunny, well-drained location in which to plant your loquat plum tree. The pH of the soil does not seem to matter to this tree. It will tolerate partial shade, but grows best to its full height of about 25 feet if planted in full sun.
- 2). Use a hose to wash away a portion of the root ball before planting. The soil-less media in which these plants are typically grown interferes somewhat with the passage of air and water into the root ball from the surrounding soil.
- 3). Dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and slightly deeper if drainage is an issue. Mix the soil you have removed with about half the same amount of peat and compost or other organic material. Sand can be added if the soil is particularly firm.
- 4). Add some of the treated soil back into the hole and set the root ball at about the same height it was growing in the pot or slightly higher. Backfill the rest of the hole and tamp it down lightly. Use any remaining soil to form a small berm or dam in a circle a few feet from the tree trunk to make watering more efficient.
- 5). Water every few days for a week. After that, once a week should suffice until the tree is established and showing signs of top growth.
- 6). Fertilize your tree twice a year during the growing season with whatever fertilizer your local agricultural extension service or garden center recommends for lawns in your area.
- 7). Prune your loquat plum tree only as necessary to remove dead wood. This can be done at any time of year. Your new tree should bear fruit in about two to three years, if temperatures permit. Otherwise, simply enjoy the shiny green serrated foliage.
