Rose Mallow Plant Growing Conditions
- Rose mallow prefers a rich soil that says consistently moist, according to the University of Illinois Extension. Because it is native to marshy areas throughout the Southeast, it will even handle wet soil. However, the soil should be well-drained in order to keep the plant's roots from rotting.
- Full sun to light shade is ideal for rose mallow. Too little light will cause stunted growth and poor flowering. Six to eight hours of sun per day will give you the best results.
- Rose mallow grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. In the colder areas, you may need to winter mulch the plant. The older stems should be cut back 3 to 6 inches above ground level at the end of autumn, recommends the Clemson University Cooperative Extension.
