Home Remedy for Chipmunks

    • 1). Lean an old board against a solid wall, creating a cozy little hideaway for killing a chipmunk. These animals seek out concealment and will feel more comfortable under cover.

    • 2). Bait a small spot under the board and close to the wall with a couple tablespoons of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, nutmeats or raisins. Leave the area and don't disturb it. Repeat this the following day to condition a chipmunk or lull it into considering the spot a safe place to pick up an easy snack.

    • 3). Smear about a ¼ tsp. of peanut butter on the trigger of an unset snap-type rat trap. The peanut butter will serve as glue as well as a chipmunk attractant. Stick a few pieces of bait to the peanut butter. Scatter a couple of dabs of bait over the wood surface of the rat trap.

    • 4). Place the trap in the same spot that you were baiting. Place the trigger end of the trap against the wall, perpendicular to it. Leave the area alone. Repeat the following day.

    • 5). Set and bait the rat trap according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Use peanut butter as glue on the trigger and stick some bait into it. Place the trap in the same spot where you've been feeding the chipmunk. Don't put bait anywhere else on or around the trap -- make the animal go right to the trigger for the treat.

    • 6). Check the trap that evening or the next day. By then you will have almost certainly captured and killed a chipmunk with it. Prod the trap holding the animal roughly with a shovel several times to make sure that it's dead. If not, flip the board over onto the ground to give you some room to smack the chipmunk hard with the shovel a time or two.

    • 7). Use heavy work gloves to pick up the trap with the dead chipmunk. Dump all into a plastic bag, tie the bag closed and dispose of in the trash.
