Lawn Care to Keep Mushrooms From Growing
- Buried construction debris or roots of removed trees play host to fungi. Old mulch, rotting thatch and animal feces also encourage mushroom growth. Damp, shady, organic conditions are ideal for fungal growth. Control these conditions as much as possible.
- Whenever possible, remove the source of the fungus. Damp, shady organic conditions encourage mushrooms. Correct drainage problems by aerating the soil. Dethatch the lawn and rake up grass clippings. Replace old, rotting mulch, and prune or thin trees to allow more sunlight to reach shady areas.
- Although fungicides will kill toadstools and mushrooms in the lawn, they don't kill the underground part of the fungus. The underground structure will produce more mushrooms the next time conditions are right for growth.
