    • 1). Add approximately a half-gallon of water to the hand sprayer and test the spray pattern of the nozzle to make sure that the chemical mixture comes out at the correct rate. The spray should be "fan-like." This step is done with only water in the tank so that the chemical is not wasted or used in a way not intended by the label.

    • 2). Pour the correct amount of 2,4-D and water into the 2-gallon tank hand sprayer. The label on the chemical will tell you how much to use.
      Secure the lid to the hand sprayer and gently shake it to make sure that the herbicide and the water have mixed correctly.

    • 3). Point the wand at the weeds and spray the broadleaf plants. Remember that the weeds only need a light coating of the herbicide. Excessive spraying of the area may have undesired effects on the evergreen ground cover.
