How to Pollinate a Dwarf Cherry
- 1). Determine the variety of dwarf cherry tree you want to grow. Not every dwarf sweet cherry tree variety will cross-pollinate with another. The Stella, Van, and Lapin sweet cherry varieties are considered universal pollinators, and will successfully pollinate with any other sweet cherry variety. Bloom time should also be considered, so your cherry trees are in bloom at the same time.
- 2). Plant your dwarf cherry tree in early spring or late fall so the trees have an opportunity to become established before the active growing season begins.
- 3). Dig the planting hole slightly larger than the root ball of the tree. Two dwarf cherry trees should be spaced no closer than 12 feet apart, but can be as far apart as 25 feet.
- 4). Add a handful of bone meal to the bottom of the hole for each tree. Bone meal will help the roots of the dwarf cherry become established in the soil stronger and faster.
- 5). Mix a shovelful of well-decayed compost into the soil to fill the hole. Compost will add nutrients for the roots and aid in water drainage. Use this compost/soil mixture to fill the planting hole around the cherry roots, then, with your foot, tamp down the soil to ensure there are no air holes and the roots have good contact with the soil.
- 6). Water your newly planted dwarf cherry trees thoroughly after planting.
