How to Replace a Tie Rod End in a VW Passat
- 1). Make sure you buy the right tie rod ends for your specific VW Passat. These can vary from model year to model year. These toe rod ends usually come with replacement nuts.
- 2). Loosen the lug nuts on the front tires and jack up your Passat. When the car's secure on jack stands, then remove the tires.
- 3). Coat the tie rod, the end of the rack, as well as the boot with oil that penetrates. Allow this oil to soak in before proceeding.
- 4). Clean the threaded portion of the tie rod, and mark the position of the jam nut with paint or a marker, then loosen it. Use tie rod end puller to separate the tie rod end from the wheel hub.
- 5). Unscrew the tie rod end from the spindle, and keep track of the number of turns it takes to do so, and remove the jam nut.
- 6). Screw on the new jam nut, then screw on the new tie rod end, making sure you do it with the same number of turns as it took to remove the old one. Slip the tie rod end back into the steering boot, and tighten the jam nut to 22 foot pounds plus a half a turn more.
- 7). Repeat the above steps for the other tie rod. Reinstall the tires, and tighten the lug nuts to 195 foot pounds. Get your Passat realigned.
