How to Replace the Crank Position Sensor for a 1990 Chevy Cavalier
- 1). Place the Cavalier's transmission into park or first gear (manual transmission). Turn off the engine and apply the parking brake.
- 2). Raise the front of the vehicle with an automotive jack and support it with jack stands. Chock the rear wheels.
- 3). Crawl underneath the engine and look directly up at the back side of the engine block. Disconnect the crankshaft sensor's electrical connector. Remove the bolt holding the crankshaft sensor to the engine using a 3/8-inch ratchet and a 10 mm metric socket.
- 4). Grip the top of the sensor with a slip-joint pliers and remove it using a twisting/pulling motion.
- 5). Lubricate the new crankshaft sensor with a light film of clean engine oil. Install the sensor into the engine block using a twisting/pushing motion. Reinstall the 10 mm retaining bolt and reconnect the electrical connector.
- 6). Lower the vehicle to the ground using the automotive jack. Start the engine and verify that it operates properly.
