    • 1). Prepare the soil bed for your mariposa lilies. Mariposa lilies prefer a sunny location and soil that is sandy and well draining. If your soil does not meet these conditions, till it about 8 inches deep and mix in approximately 3 inches of coarse sand.

    • 2). Plant mariposa lily bulbs in the fall 3 to 4 inches deep with the tips facing up. Space them 3 inches apart since their spread is about 3 inches.

    • 3). Water mariposa lily bulbs with 1 inch of water after planting.

    • 4). Fertilize mariposa lilies in the spring when they begin to grow. Use a bulb fertilizer, adhering to the rates recommended on the label.

    • 5). Water mariposa lilies once a week with 1 inch of water when rainfall is scarce. Stop watering in the summer when they die back to the ground and go dormant. In the fall, begin to water them again until winter.
