How to Wire a Delco Alternator
- 1). Disconnect the positive battery cable from your battery with a wrench before attempting to wire your Delco alternator. Tuck it safely out of the way of the battery terminals.
- 2). Locate the terminals on your Delco alternator. Expect to find up to three terminals: positive, negative (ground), and battery charge sensor (which goes to your dashboard). The positive and negative terminals are large bolts while the third is smaller. The terminals are usually on the back and are labeled.
- 3). Locate the cables and wires that connect to your alternator. One small wire, often colored yellow or blue, is nearby and extends from a wire loom. If you don't have one then it's wired differently and can be ignored. The negative cable is a thick black cable (similar in size to your battery cables) and is connected to the car's metal body. The positive cable is red and goes to your battery.
- 4). Loosen the two or three terminals using a screwdriver or wrench. Some have bolts, while others have screws. Carefully unscrew and remove them. Put them in a safe place.
- 5). Attach the black negative cable to the negative terminal of the alternator and replace the screw or bolt so it's finger tight. Attach the red positive cable to the positive terminal of the alternator and replace the screw or bolt so it's finger tight. Attach the third wire, if you have one, to the remaining terminal and replace the screw or bolt. Tighten the three screws or bolts with a screwdriver or wrench.
- 6). Reconnect the negative and positive battery cables on the corresponding battery terminals. Your Delco alternator is now wired.
