How to Put Radio Speakers in Your Car
- 1). Remove the speaker grille covers. The exact manner of removal varies from model to model. Some cars use clips, which can usually be opened with a flathead screwdriver covered in a rag. Other cars use screws or bolts to hold the grille in place.
- 2). Unscrew the old speakers. Most cars use simple Philips screws to hold the speaker to the mounting, though some use clips.
- 3). Disconnect the speaker wire from the old speaker. If possible, make a note of which color wire is positive and which is negative by examining the speaker back for an indication before disconnecting it. Many cars use slip-on metal sheaths which can simply be slid off. Many other cars come with the speaker wire soldered to the speaker; these wires will have to be clipped with wire cutters. Try to clip the wire as close to the speaker as possible, so there is ample wire left over for connecting the new speaker.
- 4). Connect the speaker wire to the new speakers. If your speaker wire uses slip-on sheaths and your new speakers come with compatible prongs, you can simply slip the sheaths onto the new speaker. Otherwise, you can connect the speaker wire leads that come with the speakers to the car's speaker wire using wire caps or electrical tape. Make sure that the positive speaker terminal is connected to the positive speaker wire.
- 5). Turn the radio on and test the system. Make sure all the speakers are working properly before doing the final installation, in case you need to adjust the connections. If any speaker fails to work properly, ensure that its terminals are making good contact with the car's speaker wires and that there are no loose connections or shorts.
- 6). Screw the new speakers into the car's mounting brackets. Aftermarket speakers come with many different mounting holes to be mountable in many different cars; you may need to rotate the speaker to align your car's mounting holes with those of the speaker.
- 7). Replace the grille covers. This generally requires pressing them into their slots until the clips engage or screwing them back into place.
