    Initial Stage

    • When preparing the soil, use a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen (N), high in phosphorus (K) and medium to high in potassium (K). The University of Missouri Extension recommends a combination of 8-32-16 or 6-24-24.

    Maintenance

    • After you establish the plants, use 1 pound of fertilizer for every 100 square feet. If you can only get analyses of 5-10-5 or 5-10-10, use 2 pounds for every 100 square feet.

    Considerations

    • Work fertilizer into the top 6 inches of soil. Don't use ammonia fertilizers such as urea or ammonium nitrate.
