How to Plant Potted Flowers Outdoors in a Soil Mix
- 1). Choose a pot that has a drainage hole at the bottom. Clay pots wick water quickly, so use plastic or another material if you wish to use less water.
- 2). Select plants for your container that can survive in the light and environment you have to offer in your house or apartment. Look at the light requirements especially, since many homes and apartments are partially shaded.
- 3). Cover the bottom of the pot with wire mesh to prevent soil from falling out, and fill the pot 3/4 full with a growing medium. Do not use soil from outside. Mix equal parts potting soil, sphagnum peat moss and perlite together to make a good potting medium for most flowers.
- 4). Place the plant in the pot and bury it at the same depth at which it was planted in the nursery or garden center.
- 5). Water the plant whenever the soil feels dry to a depth of 1/4 of an inch. Some flowers require less watering, however, so look at the care label that comes with the plant before watering.
