Carnivorous Terrariums

    Plant Type

    • There are several types of carnivorous plants available for use in a terrarium, including the Venus fly trap, pitcher plants, butterworts and sundew plants. According to the website Terrarium Man, the Venus fly trap is the easiest plant to use in a terrarium setting. These plants are hardy and do not require as much effort to raise as other carnivorous plants. Like all carnivorous plants, however, the Venus fly trap does require periodic feedings of insects.

    Container Type

    • Another factor to consider when developing your carnivorous terrarium is the type and size of the container you want. Containers should typically be made of either glass or clear plastic. However, as long as the container is clear and allows you occasional access, you can use almost anything, such as old water fountain jugs, fish bowls, alcohol containers and vases. You can also find containers made specifically for terrariums. Since you'll have to occasionally provide food and water to the terrarium, make sure it has an open top or at least a lid.

    Growth Medium

    • When you make a terrarium for carnivorous plants, you'll have to be careful to ensure that the growth medium is suited to the specific type of plant you want. For example, the Venus fly trap, as well as some other carnivorous plants, obtains all of its nutrients from sunlight and the insects it ingests. These plants do not need soil, fertilizer or other nutrient-providing mediums, as this will kill the plant. A mixture of sphagnum, or peat moss, along with sand or perlite is ideal for many carnivorous plant terrariums.

    Care

    • Carnivorous plant terrariums require some additional care that non-carnivorous terrariums do not. Depending on the kind of plant, you'll have to provide regular feedings of small insects and water. Keep your terrariums where they can receive indirect sunlight, as direct sunlight can often burn the plants or dry them out too quickly.
