How to Plant a Noble Fir
- 1). Remove plants, grass and weeds from the planting site with full sun exposure. Loosen the soil to the depth of 12 inches with a shovel. Break up the large dirt clumps with the edge of the shovel. Remove any sticks or rocks that you uncover.
- 2). Spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of shredded bark on the planting area. Mix this amendment into the loosened soil. This improves the drainage of the soil and provides the noble fir with a source of slow-release nutrients.
- 3). Remove the packaging from the noble fir tree and place the root ball in a large bucket of water. Let the roots soak for 30 minutes. Hydrating the roots help the tree to survive planting.
- 4). Dig a hole in the center of the planting area as large as the root ball. Place the roots in the hole with the roots spread out. Keep the noble fir tree upright while filling the hole with soil. Softly tamp the soil down to hold the tree in place.
- 5). Pour the bucket of water around the base of the tree. Spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of shredded bark, wood chips or dried leaves around the base of the tree. Mulching reduces weed growth and moisture loss due to evaporation.
