How to Install Parquet Flooring Over a Wood Floor With Polyurethane

    • 1). Sand the surface of the polyurethane on the wood floor, using your belt sander. Get it completely dull and free of any shine. Sweep up the dust.

    • 2). Divide the floor into four square sections with the tape measure and chalk snapline, using two lines that stretch from mid-wall to mid-wall and intersect in the middle of the floor. Use a carpenter’s square to ensure the two lines are exactly perpendicular to each other, adjusting them as needed.

    • 3). Spread flooring adhesive over the middle of the floor with the notched trowel, encompassing the intersection of the two lines. You will still be able to see the lines through the adhesive. Cover enough area to hold four parquet tiles.

    • 4). Set the first four tiles in place at the intersection, pressing them together at the fittings on the side so they’re tight. Spread additional adhesive and build outward along the lines, laying the tiles in a grid pattern. Continue until you’ve laid all the full tiles that will fit, leaving space along the walls for the partial tiles. Let the parquet tiles set overnight.

    • 5). Measure and cut the partial tiles on a table saw and glue them along the edges of the room, leaving about 1/4 inch between the cut sides of the tile and the wall to allow for wood expansion (the spaces will be covered by floor trim). Let the tiles set for another 24 hours before adding trim.
