How to Frame a Bi-Fold Door
- 1). Measure the width of the space to be framed by adding the width of the bi-fold door (or doors), the desired clearance between the doors, the width of the opening trim and roughly 1/2 inch for space between the trim and the framing.
- 2). Measure the height of the space to be framed by adding the height of the doors to the desired clearance beneath the door.
- 3). Determine where on the wall you wish to place the door. Ideally, this should be in a part of the wall that won't interfere with the trajectory of water pipes, which can be time-intensive and expensive to re-route.
- 4). Draw lines on the face of the wall to indicate where the opening must be made.
- 5). Prepare the surface of the wall by removing sheetrock or wood paneling to expose the framing studs. If framing a bi-fold door in an unfinished area, these studs should already be revealed.
- 6). Cut two pieces of lumber to fashion the king studs. These will support the door on either side, and should be braced between the floor and ceiling plate.
- 7). Align the king studs with a level to the ceiling plate, and nail it into place.
- 8). Cut two additional lengths of lumber to the measurement obtained in Step 1. These should be braced together, one atop the other, and nailed flush. This will fashion the header, and will rest over the door and help to brace the king studs.
- 9). Lift the header between the king studs with the help of an assistant. Nail it into place from the bottom, into the king studs and the ceiling plate on both sides.
