How to Build Small Shelves

    • 1). Use the stud finder to locate the studs in the area where you wish to place the shelves. Most homes in the U.S. use either 16 inch or 24 inch spaces between the studs. Mark the stud locations with a pencil for future reference.

    • 2). Cut the wood to the desired size with the saw or circular saw. The minimum length will depend on the spacing of the studs. The shelf will require at least two L brackets for stability; therefore a wall with 16-stud spacing would require a minimum shelf length of 18 to 20 inches.

    • 3). Attach the L brackets to the shelf with the wood screws and drill so that the end of the bracket is flush with the back edge of the shelf. The spaces between the brackets must coincide with the spaces between the studs. The size of the screws depends on the thickness of the shelf. The size and number of the brackets depend on the desired strength of the shelf and the overall length. Many brackets come with a printed manual that lists the proper size and number for different projects.

    • 4). Attach one side of the shelf to the wall with a single drywall screw inserted halfway. The required size of the drywall screw depends on the thickness of the sheetrock used in construction.

    • 5). Place the level on top of the shelf and adjust the other side so that the shelf is level. Insert a drywall screw to hold the shelf in place.

    • 6). Insert the remaining screws and tighten them so that the shelf is sturdy.
