How to Get Hardwood Floors to Stop Squeaking
- 1). Go underneath the flooring if you can see the bottom of the boards, and the beams and joints, such as in a crawl space or basement. You will obviously not be able to see the bottom of your flooring if it is covered up by a ceiling, so you will have to work those floors from above.
- 2). Have someone walk above you to determine the location of the squeak. You should be able to see where the bottom of the floor is giving a little during the squeak and coming in contact with the top of a joist, which looks like a small beam.
- 3). Slather wood glue on the top of a wooden shim, and jam it in between the squeaky section of flooring and the joist. This will stop the floorboard from giving and thus stop the squeaking. Repeat this process for all areas you find squeaking.
- 1). Fill a condiment dispenser bottle with either talcum powder or ultra-fine graphite powder designed specifically for use with floorboards.
- 2). Walk on the floorboards until you discover the location of the squeak.
- 3). Apply powder into the small gap between the squeaky floorboards. The powder will fill the gap, and stop the floorboards from rubbing against each other and squeaking.
- 4). Fill the gap in with some wood glue over the powder and work it in with a putty knife. Allow the area to dry, remove any excess glue with a razor blade and clean up the area.
