    • 1). Water your pygmy date palm thoroughly once the soil is dry to the touch 2 inches deep. Mist the palm a few times per week to keep the humidity levels up. Never allow the palms to completely dry out or stand in water.

    • 2). Place the pygmy date palm in a location that is between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and around 60 degrees at night in the summer months. Palms benefit from temperatures between 55 degrees and 60 degrees in the winter, when they are not actively growing.

    • 3). Fertilize with a diluted liquid fertilizer. You can also use a slow-release granular fertilizer. Fertilize weekly in the summer when the palm is actively growing. Read the instructions on the fertilizer package for application instructions.

    • 4). Rinse the foliage regularly to clean the leaves and keep insects such as mites and scale under control. Rinse outside in the warmer months and inside (for example, in a bathroom shower) during the winter months.

    • 5). Prune off the lower fronds as they begin to turn yellow or brown. Never prune off a green frond--these supply the plants with critical nutrients and promote healthy growth.
