About Boysenberries
- Investigators with the United States Department of Agriculture officials heard about Boysen's new fruit in the late 1920s, but when they found out that he had given up his experiments. USDA officials were able to salvage several vines from Boysen's abandoned farm in California and brought the vines back to health.
- Boysenberries are very large and weigh around eight grams each. The berries are a a deep maroon color with large seeds.
- Boysenberries are high in vitamin C and fiber and have twice the level of antioxidants as blueberries, according to the Oregon Raspberry and Blackberry Commission. The Commission says that 100 grams of boysenberries contain only 50.66 calories.
- Although boysenberries originated in California, New Zealand is the world's largest producer. The berries are gathered in the summer months once they have been ripened by the sun.
