Do Peace Lily Plants Like to Be Pot Bound?
- Peace lilies grow out instead of up. Healthy plants form new leaves at the plant's base and these leaves grow upward, resulting in a mounding growth habit rather than a branching one. Allowing your plant to grow in a small pot will increase its flowering potential but limit its size and growth rate. The limited growing space allows them to spend their energy growing flowers rather than foliage.
- Horticulturists from North Dakota State University recommend repotting peace lilies every two years and providing the plant with a mix of loam, sand and peat. This mixture ensures good drainage. If salt deposits or buildup begins to occur on the soil surface, repot your plant and fertilize with commercial plant feeder.
- Pot-bound plants require more frequent watering than plants in large containers. Change your watering schedule and conduct frequent soil touch tests to monitor the plant's water levels. The surface soil should be dry to the touch. Feed your plant once a week during its growing period, when flowers are beginning to form and while they are in bloom. Once the blooms begin to fade, stop applying fertilizer as the plant is entering a dormant phase.
