Manufacturing

• Most modern dobby fabric is made using a computer-controlled dobby loom. This machine uses a computer program to select which loom harness will lift or drop. Historically, these looms were controlled by wooden pegs instead of a computer, but produced similar results. Dobby fabric can be made of any textile type, but usually contains at least some cotton for a breathable, washable result. Dobby looms can make only relatively simple patterns, such as checks or chevrons, unlike the more complex, brocade-like materials produced by a Jacquard loom.
  
  

Properties

• Cotton dobby fabric is a relatively durable, breathable fabric without delicate figuring or long float threads that can snag during use. Dobby composed primarily of cotton has a relatively long staple length, producing a strong thread made almost completely of cellulose. This fabric is easy to launder and tends to breathe well when used in clothing, but is prone to wrinkling.
  
  

Uses

• Dobby fabrics come in a wide range of weights and styles, from heavy textiles used in upholstery and thick draperies, to more delicate fabrics like bird's-eye pique, which are used in shirts, children's clothing, trousers and skirts. Dobby fabrics are also popular for making diapers and baby slings, due to their soft hand and high absorbency. Dobbies containing a lower cotton content and more polyester are best used where wear and durability are a concern.
  
  

Care

• Care for cotton dobby fabric in much the same way as other cottons of the same weight. Machine wash dobby items in warm water and tumble dry, removing the fabric immediately after the cycle ends. Hot temperatures may induce shrinkage or dye bleed. Cotton dobby fabric may need ironing to reduce wrinkling. Use a relatively hot iron for all-cotton fabrics, but lower the temperature for cotton dobby that contains some polyester or other manmade materials.
