How to Preserve Fresh-Cut Gardenias
- 1). Handle gardenias gently. The flowers are easily damaged by rough handling. The fleshy flower petals break or bruise. Damage will result in browning of the petals or leaves.
- 2). Wear thin garden gloves when cutting gardenias. Oil present on the skin will quickly discolor the delicate flowers. Cut gardenias with very clean, sharp scissors or small pruning shears. Wipe off the blades with rubbing alcohol or household bleach prior to use to avoid introducing bacteria or fungi.
- 3). Provide gardenias with plenty of humidity. The freshly cut flowers will last longest if lightly sprayed with a fine mist of water. For flowers displayed in a vase or bowl, change the water daily. Place floral arrangements containing gardenias in a cool location away from heat sources or drafts.
- 4). Store gardenias for corsages or wedding arrangements in the refrigerator. Gardenias require lots of moisture. Moisten a paper towel with a few drops of water. The towel should be moist, but not soggy. Gently lay the paper towel over the flowers and store in an airtight container. If you purchase gardenia from a florist, they will be delivered in a protective plastic box. Keep them in the box until ready for use.
