How to Install Floor Trim

    • 1). Select a piece of floor trim that's longer than your starting wall, from one corner to the next. Stand the trim on your miter saw on its bottom edge, against the back fence of the saw, in the same way it will stand against the wall. Set one end of it in front of the blade, with a few inches of space beyond.

    • 2). Swivel the blade to 45 degrees facing inward, pointing toward the main span of the trim. Engage the saw. Hold the trim firmly with one hand, while bringing the saw blade down through it with the other.

    • 3). Measure from the corner outward toward the far end on the wall. Mark the measurement on your piece of trim, measuring from the further end of the miter cut. Put the mark on the top edge of the trim, at the back, where it will meet the wall.

    • 4). Set the trim back on the saw, with the new mark under the blade. Swivel the blade to 45 degrees in the opposite direction as before, so it again faces the long span of the trim. Make the cut.

    • 5). Repeat the whole process for each piece of trim around the perimeter of the floor.

    • 6). Place the pieces on their respective walls with the mitered cuts butting against each other in the corners. Shoot nails in with your finish nail gun. Put nails along the top and bottom edges of the trim, every 12 to 16 inches.
