The Ultimate Fighter Season Nine - Episode Eight

103 10
This week's episode begins with the US fighters training.
They all believe that Pierce is trying to take the easy way out of his fight, but in reality actually has a pretty bad Staph Infection.
This is a deadly and dangerous infection that can lead to horrible things like amputation.
During the UK team's training session; Dave Faulkner came out about his problem with mouth guards.
For some reason, Dave cannot keep a mouth guard in his mouth, without gagging or it bothering him to a certain degree.
Bisping warns him several times about that being a major problem, but Dave does not understand how to get over it.
The US team decides to do a cardio workout of Ultimate Frisbee.
It is a sport with a small mix of football styled rules, and a Frisbee, but with no contact.
After the game, Henderson speaks with Pierce about the infection and if he wanted to fight or not.
Pierce does not feel like he should because it is risky, but the coaches try to push him into it because it could be his only chance to show his skills to the UFC, and its fans.
The US team had the final choice of who to pick in the upcoming match ups.
They chose Dent against Lawson, which was one of the final two match ups possible.
Dan also mentioned that he had basically no choice other then to choose this match up, because his other fighter, Jason Pierce, was still trying to recover from the Staph Infection.
Dent is described in the house as an anti social person.
Dan Henderson and the coaches that he trains with also describe him as hard to teach, and that he "shuts down" during training sessions because of anger and frustration.
He prefers to fight his own way then to train and learn with others.
This is a new problem that Henderson is not used to dealing with as a coach.
Jeff Lawson in the house thought of himself as an anti social person.
After awhile though, he started to come around and show his true personality.
Jeff, Dean and Faulkner decided to have a pro wrestling match inside the house because of their unified boredom (sometimes borderline insanity).
So, two of them put on Mexican pro wrestling masks, and started to fight each other with random weapons and objects around the house.
It was a funny sight to see.
Jeff's main skill base is in Judo.
He is great at throwing people and isolating their arms for attack.
He said his game plan for the fight will be to run in, throw a several punches, and then judo toss him right into an armbar.
It has worked for him in 21 of his other amateur and professional matches, so he figured that it would work now as well.
Dent is more of a well rounded fighter, but his primary skills seem to show better on the ground then his stand up.
He will more then likely has an advantage in the stand up department, and will be a very difficult fight to finish on the ground if the fight does go there.
Dana had a talk with Pierce about fighting with his Staph Infection.
He told Pierce that he could fight if he wanted to, but Pierce basically said that he did not want to fight.
Dana then said he would decide his fate later.
Jason Dent (lightweight) vs Jeff Lawson (lightweight) Round 1 The fight begins very slow paced, with neither fighter really committing to anything.
Eventually Lawson lands a leg kick, and the fight starts to heat up.
Lawson then clinches with Dent, but Dent throws him to the side and takes his back.
Dent tries to sink his hooks in on Lawson, but Lawson is too smart and actually reverses the move on Dent by putting Dent's legs in between his own.
He then attempts a knee bar, but cannot get the leg extended.
Lawson then rolls around going for a better position, but ends up in Dent's guard, where he then postures up to the point of standing, and starts landing heavy strikes on Dent's face.
Dent blocks most of the punches that Lawson throws, but still Lawson is landing occasionally with powerful force.
Lawson then picks Dent up in his own guard and slams him on his back with some decent power.
Lawson then gets to mount at some point, but cannot finish.
Dent escapes back to full guard, and eventually kicks Lawson off of him, to get into Lawson's guard, but the round ended right then.
Round 2 Lawson begins the round looking exhausted.
Dent senses this, but does not push the pace of the fight still.
Instead he slowly attacks and puts bit of pressure on him.
Jeff starts attempted distant shots and weak takedowns, but Dent at this point is much stronger and more prepared for the takedowns.
Dent then starts throwing more strikes and landing on occasion, but Lawson attempts a flying scissor heel hook, than reverses it into a knee bar.
Dent defends well again, and they stand back up.
They both are looking down at each other with the sight of exhaustion on both of their faces (more so Lawson) when Lawson, out of nowhere, throws a flying knee that just missed Dent's face.
Lawson then attempted a final takedown that was stuffed.
Dent, still in the sprawl position, attempts an Anaconda Choke on Lawson, sinking it pretty deep, forcing Lawson to tap.
Jason Dent wins via Submission (Anaconda Choke) at 2:39 of round 2 After the fight, Dana speaks to Pierce again about his infection and tells him that he will not fight.
Pierce seemed to be a bit upset, but that was to be expected.
Next week we will find out who replaces Pierce and see if they are going to do well against the injured Faulkner or not.
We should also expect to find out who the semi finals are going to be.
So I expect some interesting match ups in that as well.
