Lost season 6 promises to answer all of the questions that avid Lost fans have been asking since season 1 debuted in September of 2004. Now over five years later the countdown has officially begun to the most anticipated series finale in television history. The date of the final season premiere has been set as Tuesday February 2, 2010.

The premiere night will feature a two hour special that will include episodes entitled LA X Part 1 and LA X Part 2. The totality of the combined episodes is expected to serve as a vehicle for jump starting the final season that is being met with mixed emotions.

While diehard Lost fans are already anticipating and trying to guess how the series finale will turn out there is a bit of early morning due to the realization that this is the final time there will be preseason hype for an upcoming season of Lost. There's a unique finality to the entire process that makes it a truly unique environment in which the passing of a television show is essentially mourned.

Among the many questions that season 6 promises to answer the explanation of the smoke monster that inhabits the island is widely considered to be one of the stranger perplexing issues that is perhaps the furthest from being resolved. Despite appearing as early as the pilot episode of season 1 almost nothing has ever been disclosed about the smoke monster. On message boards across the internet Lost fanatics theorize about what it ultimately means with many believing it is a course correcting mechanism by which major inconsistencies in the time travel matters are eliminated to maintain balance and stability across the space time continuum. Unless the smoke monster turns out to be some sort of mechanical being (nanotechnology although a good guess has been ruled out by the Lost staff) it is most certainly supernatural in a way that presumably will not conform to any logical scientific theory.

Part of the admiration for Lost stems from the meshing of science and faith and for the most part seemingly supernatural oddities have or can be explained away with rational science when complete information is available. The show has already taken time travel in a scientific direction that no mainstream public entertainment format has ever featured before.

Despite major questions about Charles Widmore's back story, the smoke monster, changing history, the all important genesis between Jacob and his nemesis the overwhelming question can simply be summed up as "why"? As in, why is all of this happening. Suspicions point to cosmic motivations that go much deeper than coincidence or the importance of any one particular character's life. The anticipation that the island's unique properties may have implications of biblical proportions is an enthralling idea for and Lost fan, whether they be casual in nature or a Lost guru (like this author).

Going into the final season of Lost the only things we can say with certainly are that the final season will begin February 2, air eighteen hours of much anticipated new programming on a weekly basis, and when the season finale concludes Lost fans will have mixed emotions.
