How to Clone a Notebook Computer
- 1). Remove software programs on your computer you no longer want or use. Do this from your "Control Panel" if you use a PC, or from "Finder" if you use a Mac. Having these extra programs takes up space and creates clutter on your hard drive and on your computer's new clone backup.
- 2). Download or install a copy of cloning software, such as Ghost 2003 or HD Clone (see Resources). Restart your computer if necessary to finalize the settings of your deleted programs and your cloning software before you begin the cloning process.
- 3). Connect your external hard drive to your notebook via one of your USB ports. Ensure your notebook recognizes the external drive before you proceed.
- 4). Open and run your cloning software. Tell the software to place the clone on your external hard drive and go through the on-screen prompts that pop up to take you through the process of cloning your computer. Each cloning software is different in its processes, but they all have the same end result. Wait for the program to finish running and for the cloning process to complete.
- 5). Safely eject your external hard drive and close out the cloning software on your computer. Re-clone your notebook computer every once in a while as you deem necessary.
