LED Lighting vs. Strobe for Photography

    Setting Up LED Lighting

    • LED lighting is convenient because of its maneuverability and accessibility. Due to their size, LEDs can be set up with minimal effort and don't require a professional technician. A photo shoot using LED lighting may require only a few inches of Gaffer's tape and a wall to achieve optimal quality. Furthermore, LEDs can be arranged to provide focused lighting at the bottom of a subject without illuminating either above and around.

    Setting Up Strobe Lighting

    • Strobes are often used to supplement light and eliminate shadows from an image. To achieve this, strobes must be set up to balance other illumination in a natural way.  Because professional strobe lighting is less convenient than LEDs, it takes much more time to set up properly than LEDs. Strobes can also be used with umbrella reflectors to naturally diffuse light on the subject and create soft shadows — rather than filling in light — by directing it more effectively. Strobe photography is used for showcasing high-end properties for the best image possible.

    Characteristics Of LED Lighting

    • LEDs don't give off much light, but they are cheap in comparison to strobe and other photography lighting. Because of their low-light level, LEDs are used with short exposures and a close depth of field. The light given off by LEDs is generally cold and white with a small color-rendering index. The CRI of an image can provide various effects when used properly, but it can also take away from the authenticity of the image being shot.

    Characteristics Of Strobe Lighting

    • Photographers often remark on the natural daylight quality of strobe lighting. Because of this, strobes can be mixed with daylight to provide better light for a subject without creating an odd assortment of natural and unnatural illumination. Strobes limit shadowy areas and harsh lighting that overpowered strobes or LEDs might otherwise create. Strobes are flash-type lighting, similar to a typical camera flash. The flash tube fires when the camera tells it to, giving the strobe long life without creating excess heat. Other advantages include a warmer and truer color temperature than LEDs.
