How Do I Become a Substitute Teacher in NYC?
- 1). Contact the principal of the school you would like to work in and ask him to fill out a principal's on-line nomination.
- 2). Provide the principal with a resume and answer any questions she may have regarding your prior teaching experience and classes you would like to teach. The school may ask you to come in for an in-person interview.
- 3). Wait for an e-mail from the New York City Department of Education with information on how to access and complete the online application.
- 4). Complete the online application in order to be processed for the Occasional Per Diem Certificate (OPDC), once you have been invited to do so.
- 5). Complete a written and oral assessment and a short training program in order to begin working at the nominating school.
- 6). Wait for a call directly from the school or the centralized Office of Sub Central inviting you to work.
