Home Remedies for Cleaning Stubborn Soot Film From a Tile Floor
- Make a homemade cleaner by mixing 1/4 cup of baking soda, 1 cup household ammonia, 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1 gallon of water in a plastic container with a lid. Use a soft-bristle brush for stubborn soot spots, rubbing the cleaning solution into the tile in a circular motion. For cleaning grout lines, use a grout brush. This can remove soot between the tiles. Rinse off your homemade cleaning solution with clean water. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles when working closely with ammonia, as it can get into your eyes when brushing.
- A diluted bleach home remedy can help remove stubborn soot from tiles, but you will need to follow safety guidelines and wear gloves as well as safety goggles. Bleach can cause discoloration, so be careful when using it around kitchen cabinets, carpeted areas or laminate floors.
Dilute bleach by mixing 1/8 cup of liquid bleach with 1 quart of cold water in a plastic bucket. Moisten an old but clean cloth with the solution, and wipe the tiles. Leave this solution on for two minutes, then rinse with clean water. A soft-bristle brush can come in handy to scrub out spots that will not come clean with a cloth. - Stubborn soot will be visible on tiles and also in grout lines. Spray full-strength white distilled vinegar onto the grout and let it sit for five minutes. Scrub the grout lines with an old toothbrush or grout brush.
To make a vinegar solution as a tile cleaner, mix three drops of dishwashing liquid to a mixture of 1 part white distilled vinegar, 1 part alcohol and 1 part water. Apply this vinegar solution to the tile, allow it to sit for no more than five minutes and then mop with clean water.
