• Pocket doors are framed sliding doors that are often used for bathrooms and storage rooms. They are also common in RVs and mobile homes. The advantage is they do not swing into or out of a room, allowing for more freedom with floor plan design. Curtains

• For smaller rooms, particularly those where privacy is not an issue, consider a curtain instead of a pocket door. Cheap, easy to install, and low maintenance, a curtain can serve the basic function of a door, keeping a room closed off from the rest of the house, very easily. Especially when matched against the installation hassle of a pocket door, curtains are very useful for RVs and mobile homes and storage rooms. They are not a good alternative for bedrooms and bathrooms, as they do not afford much privacy.
  
  

Accordion Doors

• An accordion door is a very good alternative to a pocket door, as it offers the same space efficiency benefits. A door made of vinyl, plastic, or wood, is mounted in a track and "collapses" to one side of the door frame, much like a horizontal window blind. The mechanism is all visible, so it is easily maintained, and installation is much easier than a pocket door, not requiring any extra space. Accordion doors can be custom-designed to match any size door, including large double-door openings between rooms, making them more versatile than pocket doors as well.
  
  

Traditional Doors

• A traditional, hinge mounted door is an excellent alternative for a pocket door. Many homeowners choose to remove pocket doors and install more traditional doors for reasons including convenience, security, and sound insulation. Traditional doors can easily be sized to fit the same space as a pocket door and offer a wider variety of design options to choose from.
