How to Design a Pantry
- 1
Build shelves of varying heights along three walls. Leave room beneath the shelves for recycling bins. Measure the shelves to ensure that small appliances and large bulk items will fit. Create space for large items that aren't used frequently, such as turkey roasters and stock pots. - 2
Install hooks on the back of the pantry door for aprons, brooms and mops. If you prefer not to hang your brooms and mops, leave one corner of the room open to the ceiling for tall items. - 3
Use bins or baskets for storing potatoes and onions. Potatoes should be stored in a cool, dark place. Onions need good air circulation and cool temperatures. - 4
Purchase a library stool for reaching items that are on top shelves. A library stool can be stored out of the way under the shelves and is very sturdy when you're standing on it. - 5). Consider building a counter to use for temporary storage when you're entertaining. Set dishes that are waiting to be served, a coffee urn and extra plates and flatware on it.
- 6
Put in enough drawers to hold dish towels, infrequently used kitchen tools and items like spare batteries and candles. - 7). Use deep sliding shelves. You can store more and still be able to see what's at the back of the shelf.
- 8
Make sure the pantry has at least one electrical outlet for use with battery chargers or small appliances like crock pots.
