Do It Yourself: Home Decor
- 1). Find an old pillow or purchase a pillow form and measure a piece of fabric that is 1 inch wider than the pillow and two and one half times the length of the pillow.
- 2). Roll the raw edges of all sides of the fabric under approximately 1/2 inch. Pin in place.
- 3). Place the good side of the fabric facing down on your sewing machine and sew the rolled hem that you just created. Sewing the hem will hide any raw edges.
- 4). Lay out the fabric on a flat surface lengthwise left to right so that the good side of the fabric is facing you. Measure the length of the fabric and mark the fabric exactly at the halfway point. Take the left end of the fabric and fold inward to meet the halfway point. Pin in place along the edges. Then take the right end of the fabric and fold it inward as well to meet the halfway point, and pin the edges in place.
- 5). Sew along the edges that you just pinned.
- 6). Turn the pillowcase inside out so that you see clean edges. Fill the case with your pillow form or old pillow.
- 1). Find an old lampshade or purchase an inexpensive one in the shape that you desire.
- 2). Place a dab of a strong glue on the underside of 3/8-inch wide velvet ribbon trim.
- 3). Start at the bottom edge of the lampshade and begin to evenly roll out the velvet ribbon trim, wrapping around the lampshade and adding glue as you go.
- 4). Continue to wrap until the entire lampshade is covered.
- 5). Trim the end of the velvet ribbon with scissors.
- 1). Add a bit of character to a plain white or light colored lampshade in your home by finding a stencil or a template of a shape you like. For instance, print out a picture of a single flower or an animal.
- 2). Trace the edges of the stencil or template onto black paper.
- 3). Cut out the shape you just traced.
- 4). Stick the black shape on the inside of the lampshade using double sided tape.
- 5). Turn on the light to reveal the silhouette.
