How to Get Rid of Shiny Coating Painted on a Stone Fireplace
- 1). Sand the corners of your taping knife with a hand-held filing tool. Sharp corners of the knife will damage the stone.
- 2). Put on goggles, a mask and gloves. Open windows and doors to create ventilation in the room. Lay a tarp on the ground beneath the fireplace.
- 3). Apply paint stripper with a paint brush to the fireplace stones. Allow the stripper to soften the polyurethane for 30 minutes.
- 4). Scrape the shiny coating from the face of the stones with a taping knife and a metal scraper. Use the taping knife for the mortar and the metal scraper for the face of the stones. Work across the entire fireplace until you have removed all of the polyurethane.
- 5). Combine two tablespoons of dish washing soap and warm water in a bucket. Use a sponge to wipe the chemicals off of the stone. Rinse with clean water.
