Vinegar and Dish Soap

• For fresh urine stains and odor, blot up excess liquid and rinse the area thoroughly with lukewarm water. Then apply a solution consisting of three tablespoons white vinegar and one teaspoon liquid dish soap. Leave this on for 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly--with several rounds of lukewarm water if necessary--and then blot dry. (ref 1)
  
  

Carpet Deodorizer

• To remove pet odor from carpet, sprinkle carpet with baking soda or an even mixture of baking soda and cornstarch. For scent, add a pinch of cinnamon or other pleasant-smelling, dry herb to the mixture and test it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet. Allow your preferred mixture to sit overnight and then vacuum. Soak a cotton ball in lemon juice, let it dry and add it to the vacuum bag or collection cup for added deodorization. (ref 1)
  
  

Tea-Tree Based Cleaners

• If home remedies fail, a commercial product may be necessary. Experts from the Carpet Buyers Handbook tested several carpet cleaning products for removing pet stains, including urine stains. They concluded a commercially available tea tree-oil based cleaner that also contained detergents and disinfectants outperformed several professional carpet cleaning formulas on pet stains.
