Student Leadership Program
Being in school is a great thing-you learn about so many things, you meet new people-classmates and professors, you can join student associations and pursue your dreams.
As you go through college, you may also engage in a student leadership program designed to help students become leaders in various areas in the campus and in the broader community.
Here are several ways to develop and model student leadership.
Provide role models.
Role models can be very powerful in terms of influencing students toward becoming leaders.
These role models may be politicians and government employees.
Or they may be philanthropists and business leaders.
The students have a choice about who to follow.
This can then become a full fledged Coaching or Mentoring program in the school.
The participants will appreciate the time they will spend in the presence of their mentor or role models.
Teach them the value of a vision.
Good leaders practice foresight and see the future.
They craft a dream, or discover it and describe it to the people who follow him.
A carefully crafted vision has the power to captivate people and inspire them to action.
A good leader is also capable of "selling" and getting others fired up for this vision.
Thinking out of the box.
This is a metaphor for using creativity and imagination in thinking about processes and systems.
Good leaders need to learn how to dissect an idea or a process, rebuild it, challenge its assumptions and come up with an improved version of such a process.
Young people are creative and they can turn things upside down while looking for creative means to solving different problems that come their way.
Involve others to act.
Students can also mobilize others toward goals that they identified.
Some youth may be seen as apathetic and apolitical but take a look at what happened in the Middle East.
Young people fueled the political protests against the decades-long rule of dictators.
When you empower students and they realize their power, they can overthrow dictators and overcome problems that they encounter.
Target the heart.
The idealism of young people causes them to pursue goals and activities that they find meaning in.
The things they learn will seem meaningless unless they could find ways to translate these lessons to action.
