How to Put a TV Over a Fireplace
- 1). Locate the studs in the wall behind your fireplace, which is the only secure way to mount a TV over fireplace. Hold a stud finder flush against the wall and slide it horizontally. The stud finder will beep when it located a stud; mark that location with a pencil.
- 2). Use your stud markings as a reference and hold the base of your fireplace television mount up against the wall to determine where you should mount it. The safest way to mount your television is to make sure every screw you drill into the mount hits a stud. Note the pre-drilled holes on your mount, which is where you will insert screws, and see how they line up with the available studs in your wall to determine the location to install the fireplace television mount. Use your pencil to mark the top two holes you will drill when you install your mount.
- 3). Set the back of your TV mount to the side and run a level between the two markings you made for the holes you will drill. Make sure they are level before you drill to ensure your television mount is level when you install it. If you markings you made are not level, make adjustments as necessary so you still hit a stud but so the holes you drill are level.
- 4). Drill pilot holes into the final markings you make for your fireplace TV installation. You'll secure the mount to the wall using thick-gauge screws. Drilling pilot holes ahead of time makes it easier to drill those screws.
- 5). Ask a friend to hold the base of the television wall mount up against the wall in the area where you will install it, making sure it lines up with the pre-drilled holes you just made. Drill screws, included with your mount, through the pre-drilled holes on the back of your mount and into the pre-drilled holes you made in the previous step to secure the mount to the wall.
- 6). Look at the back of your television set where you'll find designated holes where you can attach a mount. Your fireplace television mount has a front plate, which will mount to the back of your TV. Screws enclosed with the mount work best to secure the mount to the back of your television.
- 7). Connect all of the cables that run between your television set and the electrical devices that connect to your TV. When the TV already hangs on the wall, it's too difficult to access the back of your TV and plug the appropriate cables in correctly, which is why it's best to make all your connections before you hang the TV over fireplace.
- 8). Consider aesthetics when you run your TV cabling. If possible, cut a small hole in the wall behind where your television will hang and run the cables behind the wall. An easier alternative is to purchase surface mounted channels, available in numerous colors, and run your cabling through the channels to keep them neat and hidden.
- 9). Ask for your friend's assistance to hang the TV on your wall mount. The front plate, mounted to the back of your television set, has arms that stick out away from the TV. Set these arms on the base in the appropriate position to secure the TV to the wall over your fireplace.
