How to Automate the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP

    • 1). Click the "Start" button. Click "Run."

    • 2). Type "cleanmgr /sageset:50" into the Run box. Click "OK."

    • 3). Check the box next to each item you want Disk Cleanup to clean. Click "OK" when finished.

    • 4). Click on the "Start" button. Click "Settings." Click "Control Panel."

    • 5). Double-click on "Scheduled Tasks." Click "Add Scheduled Task."

    • 6). Click "Next" in the Scheduled Task Wizard window that appears. Highlight "Disk Cleanup" in the list of programs and click "Next."

    • 7). Type a name for the task into the box. Click on the frequency at which you wish to run Disk Cleanup: you can run the task daily, weekly or monthly. Click "Next."

    • 8). Click the up and down arrow keys next to the "Start Time" box to pick the hour at which you want Disk Cleanup to automatically start. Click one of the intervals beneath the "Perform This Task" heading. Your choices include every day, on weekdays or at custom intervals. Click the arrow next to the "Start Date" box to choose on which date you would like the automated Disk Cleanup to run. Click "Next."

    • 9). Type your username and password into the boxes in the next window. Click "Next."

      Check the box next to "Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish" in the final window. Click "Finish."

      Type a space and the text "/sagerun:50" into the Run box, after the line of text that ends in "cleanmgr.exe." Click "Apply." Click "OK." Type your username and password into the boxes if prompted. Click "OK" to set Disk Cleanup to run automatically at the times and dates you specified.
