How to Change the Timing of Automatic Updates in the Popup Reminder Registry
- 1). Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously to load a "Run" box.
- 2). Type "Regedit" in the "Run" box and click "OK." This loads the Windows Registry Editor.
- 3). Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows" in the left pane.
- 4). Right-click the "Windows" folder. Click "New," and then click "Key." This will make a new subfolder called "New Key #1." Right-click "New Key #1" and then click "Rename." Rename the key "Windows Update".
- 5). Right-click the "Windows Update" folder. Click "New," and then click "Key." This will make a new subfolder called "New Key #1." Right-click "New Key #1" and then click "Rename." Rename the key "AU".
- 6). Right-click "AU" and click "New," and then click "DWORD (32-Bit) Value." This will add a new value in the right-pane called "New Value #1."
- 7). Right-click "New Value #1" and then click "Rename." Rename the value "RebootRelaunchTimeout".
- 8). Right-click "RebootRelaunchTimeout" and then click "Modify." This displays a dialog box with a "Value Data" field. The value in this box will be used for the amount of minutes Windows will wait to remind you to restart your computer. Enter the number of minutes you would like to set for the reminder. Valid ranges are "1" through "1440." For example, if you wanted to be reminded once every two hours, you would use the value "120."
