    • 1). Turn off your computer. Remove all power and data cables and place the computer on a clean, sturdy table.

    • 2). Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the top access panel in place (on the back of the computer case.) Place the screws in a cup or bag for safekeeping. Slide the cover back, remove it and set it aside.

    • 3). Identify the CPU cooler. It's the square, upward-facing fan attached to an aluminum piece on the motherboard. Unplug the 3- or 4-prong power cable from the motherboard. Use the flat head screwdriver to loosen the cooler screws. Remove the cooler and set it aside.

    • 4). Use a coin or razor blade to remove any dried thermal paste from the CPU. Place a pea-sized drop of new thermal paste on the CPU. Place your new CPU cooler on top of the CPU and screw it into the mounting bracket. Attach the 3- or 4- prong power cable to the motherboard.

    • 5). Replace the access panel and screw it back into place. Place your computer into its normal spot and reattach the power and data cables. Turn on your computer.
