    • 1). Obtain a Minnesota taxi driver's license from the Licenses and Consumer Services Division. To get your license, you must be at least 18, with at least one year of driving experience and a good driving record. You must also have a DOT medical card, pass a criminal background check, and earn a taxi-driving training certificate.

    • 2). Fill out a vehicle license application. The application requires information about your vehicle and your driver's license. You will need to know your vehicle's VIN (vehicle identification number) and license plate number, and attach a photocopy of your driver's license or state identification card as well as a copy of the title to your vehicle.

    • 3). Undergo a criminal background check. You can acquire a copy of your criminal history at the State of Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, or by visiting www.cch.state.mn.us and following the steps for a new criminal history report. The background report that you submit with your application must be dated within the previous 30 days.

    • 4). Fill out a data privacy form. This allows the Minneapolis Police Department, the Division of Licenses and Consumer Services, the License Inspection Unit, the Minneapolis City Council and the general public to check records about you, include driving record and criminal history. If you do not provide this authorization, your application will not be processed.

    • 5). Acquire insurance. Unless you are self-insured, or do not have any employees, you must carry worker's compensation insurance. You must also have liability insurance. Include a copy of your insurance policy with your application for a license.

    • 6). Get a vehicle inspection, once the license application has been improved. Once the application is approved, a member of the license department staff will contact you to schedule an appointment for inspection. All inspections are completed at the Currie Garage, located at 1200 Currie Avenue North.

    • 7). Affix your City of Minneapolis Taxicab Vehicle License sticker to the left side of the rear window of your vehicle. Failure to do this is a violation of city ordinances, and you may be charged with operating a taxi without a license.
