How to Haul a Telescopic Forklift in Minnesota
- 1). Rent or purchase a low-bed trailer and the appropriate truck to haul it. Eight-wheel low-beds are sufficient to haul most forklifts.
- 2). Park the trailer on a flat, even surface. Forklifts can tip easily. Avoid parking on a slope.
- 3). Extend the loading ramps from the trailer. Some trailers unload on the side or front, while others unload in the rear. Slowly drive the forklift up the ramp, keeping its fork as low as possible. Driving up the ramp with the fork in the air raises the machine's center of gravity and increases the likelihood of tipping.
- 4). Park the forklift. Lower the fork all the way to the bed. Turn off the key.
- 5). Place chocks behind all four wheels. This prevents the forklift from rolling.
- 6). Secure the forklift to the bed of the trailer according to the regulations of the FMCSA. The FMCSA requires that the forklift have at least five tiedowns. These might consist of chains, wire rope, steel strapping, synthetic webbing or cordage. Two tiedowns must be as close to the front of the machine as possible. Two must be at the back, and at least one must secure the fork.
- 7). Drive slowly and carefully to the destination. Avoid quick starts and sudden stops. A driver must be licensed to haul heavy machinery.
