How Do I Clear CMOS on an Acer Aspire 5100?
- 1). Back up the Acer Aspire 5100 series notebook so that any important files and settings are stored on an external backup drive, optical discs or network location if possible.
- 2). Power off the notebook and make sure the power cord is also disconnected. Close the lid and flip the notebook over onto its cover. Remove the battery from the compartment on the bottom of the computer.
- 3). Remove the screws from the hard drive compartment, then slide the hard drive away from the connector about a half inch. Remove the hard drive from the notebook.
- 4). Remove the screws from the memory compartment, and remove the RAM by gently spreading the RAM module retaining tabs outward and pivoting the RAM upward slightly until it pulls easily out of the slot.
- 5). Remove all of the screws from the base of the computer.
- 6). Flip the computer right side up and open the lid. Gently pull the plastic retaining ring from around the keyboard and remove the retaining screws located under the ring.
- 7). Pull the keyboard up about an inch, then disconnect the small ribbon cables that hold the keyboard and touch pad to the motherboard by sliding the retaining clip up gently and sliding out the cable. Remove the keyboard from the Acer Aspire 5100.
- 8). Remove the retention screws from under the keyboard, then gently slide the plastic knife or credit card along the seam between the upper part of the case and the lower part of the case. Gently pry the two halves apart, being careful not to break the tiny retaining tabs.
- 9). Remove the top section of the case and set it aside. Remove the screws that hold the motherboard in place.

Pull the motherboard out of the Aspire 5100 series and disconnect the small wire that connects the CMOS clock battery to the motherboard. Wait one hour and reassemble the system.
